Simple Tricks for Creating a Softer, More Lifted Brow
Sometimes the smallest makeup changes make the biggest difference, and your brows are a perfect example.
You don’t need to completely reshape them or follow every new brow trend to create a softer, more lifted look. A few small changes in where and how you apply your products can help open up the eye area and give your entire face a subtle lift.
Morgan recently shared some of her favorite brow techniques on Good Day Sacramento, including how to map the brow, where to add definition, and a simple concealer trick that can create the appearance of lift.
Here’s how you can try them at home.
Start With Your Natural Brow Shape
Before reaching for your brow pencil, take a look at the shape you already have.
We like to think of the brow in three main points: where it begins, where the arch reaches its highest point, and where the tail ends.
As a general guide, the brow begins around where the side of the nose meets the inner eye area. The arch typically falls around the outside of the pupil when you’re looking straight ahead, and the tail extends toward the outside of the eye.
These aren’t rigid rules. Every face is different. Think of brow mapping as a guide to help you work with your natural features rather than forcing your brows into a particular shape.
Want a More Lifted Brow? Focus on Placement
One of the easiest ways to create a more lifted appearance is to pay attention to where you add definition.
Rather than immediately outlining underneath the entire brow, focus some of your definition toward the upper portion of the brow as you move toward the arch.
Think of it almost like subtly overlining your lips. You aren’t creating an entirely new shape. You’re gently enhancing what’s already there.
Use a brow pencil or small angled brush and work toward the peak of the brow with short, light strokes. Then continue toward the tail without pulling the shape too far downward.
Those short strokes matter because they mimic natural brow hairs and keep the finished brow from looking drawn on.
Keep the Front of Your Brows Soft
Remember the very sculpted, squared-off brows that were everywhere a few years ago?
We can leave those behind.
For a softer, more natural brow, keep the inner portion light and fluffy. You should still be able to see some variation between the individual hairs rather than one solid block of color.
If you’re using a pencil, use your lightest pressure at the front. Then brush the hairs upward with a spoolie or brow gel.
The result feels softer, fresher, and much more natural.
Try This Concealer Trick for a Subtle Lift
This simple makeup trick can make a surprising difference.
Light brings an area forward, so using concealer strategically around the brow can help create the appearance of additional lift.
Choose a concealer about two to three shades lighter than your skin tone. Apply a small amount underneath the highest point of the arch and blend carefully. You can also add a touch above the brow near the arch to help emphasize the shape.
The key is keeping it subtle. You shouldn’t see an obvious stripe of concealer. The goal is simply for the eye area to appear a little brighter and more lifted.
Brow Pencil, Powder, or Gel?
There are a lot of brow products out there, but you probably don’t need all of them.
Here’s a simple way to decide what makes sense for your brows:
Brow pencil: Best for filling sparse areas and creating small, hair-like strokes.
Brow powder: Great for adding soft fullness and definition.
Brow gel: Helps set existing hairs in place and gives the brow a polished finish.
Laminating gel: Offers stronger hold and can help brush the hairs upward, making it easier to see and shape your natural brow.
And if your brows are already naturally full? You may only need a little gel.
More product doesn’t necessarily mean a better brow.
A Few Brow Mistakes to Avoid
One of the biggest mistakes is using too much pressure with a brow pencil. Heavy pressure creates obvious lines instead of the appearance of natural hairs.
It’s also easy to overfill the front of the brow or apply the same amount of product everywhere. Natural brows have dimension, so some areas should look softer than others.
Finally, be careful with the tail. Extending it too far downward can visually pull the outer eye down with it. A small adjustment in the direction of the tail can make a noticeable difference.
The goal isn’t perfect symmetry or a trendy brow shape. It’s finding what works with your face.
FAQ: Creating Softer, More Lifted Brows
Do I need to fill in my entire brow?
No. Start by filling only the areas that look sparse or need a little more definition. If you already have naturally full brows, brow gel may be all you need.
How can I make my brows look lifted without making them look dramatic?
Focus your definition around the upper portion of the brow leading into the arch. Keep your strokes light, avoid pulling the tail too far downward, and try a small amount of lighter concealer around the arch.
Should my eyebrows match exactly?
No. Natural brows are rarely perfectly symmetrical. Aim for balance rather than making them identical.
Should I use brow gel before or after filling my brows?
It depends on what your brows need. A stronger laminating-style gel can be used first to brush the hairs upward and help you see your shape. A lighter brow gel can also be used at the end to set everything in place.
